What to Look for in a Refrigeration Manufacturer Partner: A Distributor’s Checklist
Taking on a refrigeration distributorship is a long-term bet. You put your capital into stock, your time into building a market and your reputation behind every unit you sell. If the manufacturer gets something wrong, it is your phone that rings.
Spec sheets will not tell you who to partner with, because on paper most ranges look alike. The real differences show up over the following five years: in build consistency, in parts availability and in how the manufacturer behaves once the honeymoon is over.
1. Who actually builds the product?
A surprising number of refrigeration brands are trading companies. They select units from third-party factories,
apply their branding and sell them on. The factory behind the range can change from one order to the next, and
so can the components inside the units.
That model is legal and widespread, but it leaves a gap between the brand you deal with and the people who
built your stock. When quality slips, a trading company cannot fix the cause; it can only change supplier and
hope.
So start here: does the manufacturer own its factory? How long has it run it? And will they let you walk the
production line?
For reference, this is where we set our own benchmark: Husky products come from our wholly-owned 10,000
square-metre facility in Guangzhou, opened in 2014, building to the specifications of our British engineering
team. Design and manufacture answer to the same management, and we welcome visits from serious
prospective partners. [FACT-CHECK: confirm the factory-visit offer in print, as flagged on the earlier
drafts]
2. How is quality proven before it ships?
Every manufacturer says quality matters. The useful question is how they prove it.
In-house testing is the clearest signal. A manufacturer with its own test centre can show you performance and
energy-consumption data for the exact models you would stock, tested against the standards of the markets you
sell into, and can explain the results because its own engineers produced them. A trading company has to
request that data from whoever built this year’s range.
Ask to see test reports before you commit. If the answer is a brochure rather than data, that tells you something
too.
Our units go through our accredited in-house test centre before they ship, verified against the standards of every
market we sell into. [FACT-CHECK: accreditation wording, as flagged on the earlier drafts]
3. What protects the market you build?
This is the clause that matters most in year three. You spend the early years introducing the brand, training your
team and winning accounts. If the manufacturer can then appoint a second distributor into the territory you
developed, or supply your largest customer directly, your investment has built someone else’s pipeline.
Ask three things. Is my territory exclusive? Is that exclusivity written into the agreement rather than promised in
conversation? And do my terms improve as the market grows, so the reward for developing the territory lands
with the company that did the work?
We offer our partners exclusive territories and preferential terms for committed distributors, because we would
rather have one well-backed partner per market than three competing ones. [FACT-CHECK: confirm how
Husky words the exclusive-territory and preferential-terms offer, and any conditions attached]
4. What support arrives after you sign?
The first order is the start of the relationship, not the end of it. Building a market needs product photography,
spec sheets, brochures, launch material and web content, and producing all of that yourself from a standing start
is slow and expensive.
Ask what the manufacturer provides as standard: brand and product assets, campaign material, support with
launches and exhibitions, and what happens to enquiries that arrive from your region through the manufacturer’s
own website.
Husky partners draw on our marketing support and product content, and enquiries from a partner’s territory are
passed to that partner. [FACT-CHECK: confirm the marketing-support detail and the enquiry-routing
commitment; routing ties into the Find a Distributor fallback decision still open with PT]
5. What happens when something breaks?
Commercial refrigeration lives a hard life. Sooner or later a compressor, fan or controller will need replacing,
and at that moment your after-sales reputation depends entirely on the manufacturer’s parts operation.
This is where trading companies struggle most. When the factory behind a range changes, the parts change with
it, and a three-year-old unit can become unrepairable overnight. A manufacturer that controls its own bill of
materials can keep parts consistent and available for the long term.
Ask where spare parts are stocked, what the lead times are to your market and who answers technical questions:
a sales office, or the people who engineered the unit.
Because we build our products ourselves, we control the bill of materials, and we back our distribution network
with parts and technical support in more than 25 countries. [FACT-CHECK: parts availability wording for
distributors, as flagged on the earlier drafts]
The checklist
Put these to every manufacturer on your shortlist, including us:
- Do you own your factory, or buy from third-party factories?
- How long has the current factory built your range?
- Can I visit the production line and test centre?
- Can I see test data for the models I would stock, against my market’s standards?
- Is my territory exclusive, and is that in the written agreement?
- How do my terms improve as I grow the market?
- What marketing assets and launch support do you provide?
- What happens to enquiries from my region that arrive through your website?
- Where are spare parts stocked, and what are the lead times to my market?
- Can I speak to one of your longest-standing distributors?
A manufacturer worth partnering with will enjoy answering these. Evasive answers now save you discovering
the same gaps after you have signed.
How we measure up
We published this checklist because it is the one we are happy to be measured against: a wholly-owned factory
since 2014, accredited in-house testing, exclusive territories with preferential terms for committed partners,
marketing support behind every launch and parts backup across more than 25 countries.
If you are weighing up a refrigeration distributorship, put the same ten questions to us. Visit our partner page or
contact us, and we will give you the answers, the test data and, if you would like one, a factory tour.
